Answers to Your Questions #441

Sharing Printers
Adam, LaSalle, ON

Q: I have a small home network set up with several windows and mac nodes. Currently, the Macs all share one printer (connected to one of the Macs), while the Windows clients all share another printer (connected to one of the windows clients). I seem to be unable to share a printer, from the Mac to a Windows Client or visa versa.

I’ve found that the easiest way to share printers over a network with Macs is using the Bonjour technology. Most newer printers support Bonjour. And Apple offers a Bonjour driver for Windows. Bonjour (previously known as Rendezvous, and known on the Windows side by the more serious Zero Config) allows devices to automatically configure themselves. It’s particularly handy in situations like this.

Using Wireless Mics
Steve, Montreal, QC

Q: Hey, I was just wondering how to hook up wireless lapel microphones to a mini DV camcorder. I’m assuming I need a receiver that will hook to the microphone in jack on the camcorder and then use just use wireless lapel mics to send the audio to the receiver. I’m wondering if you can recommend a receiver and mics that’ll do the job without killing my bank account. I’m also wondering what’s a good camcorder to use for a setup of that type.

You’ve guessed correctly. Sony and many others make wireless mics that work. But let’s ask our video podcasters what they use!

IP Conflicts
Justin, Kingston, ON

Q: On my computer an info ballon keeps on poping up saying “System error there is an IP adress conflict with an other system on the network” and it pops up about every 30 secconds, please help! PS if it help the computer that I’m using is a Dell notebook.

There’s another computer on your network with the same IP address. This is not allowed. IP addresses are like phone numbers. Every computer needs a unique one. If you are using a router and DHCP you won’t have this problem. It’s likely you’ve got your network misconfigured in some way. If you’ve intentionally chosen static IP addresses, however, you’ll need to go around to all the machines on your network and make sure each has its own.
