Missing Search Engines
Matthew, Ottawa, ON
Q: All of my search engines from the search bar are gone and I cant get them back I tried reinstalling Firefox and I still cant get them. Thank you for your time. Your feedback will be gratly appreciated. your fan matt.
This can happen when a configuration file in Firefox gets corrupted. Exit Firefox completely and then start it in safe mode. A window called Firefox Safe Mode with some troubleshooting options will appear. Select the option “Reset toolbars and controls” and choose “Make Changes and Restart”.
Copying DVDs
John, Glocester, VA
Q: Are there any utilities out there, preferably free, that I can use to copy DVDs that I made on a DVD recorder connected to my TV? The only DVD copying programs I’ve found deal with breaking the copy-protection and such. I don’t need that since they’re home made DVDs. Thanks!
Any DVD burning program will copy unprotected DVDs. We like Nero. Burn4Free is… free from burn4free.com
Learning Linux
Rod, Picola, VIC
Q: Can you please tell me of a good book that i could read to help me understand Linux. And which is better the Kde or Gnome. Also I dont understand how u know which rpms to use some are i386 or i586 my firefox says that i am useing i686 so am at a loss also i can not get GIAM messenger to work it just keeps saying can not connect to msn or yahoo messenger please please help.
Our friend Marcel Gagne’s book, Moving to Linux: Kiss the Blue Screen of Death Goodbye, is a great book for Linux switchers. I do recommend KDE for you because it’s more like Windows, but Gnome is great, too.RPMs are binary installations, much like Windows installers. Since you have a Pentium 4, use the 686 RPMs if available, but the 386 versions will work fine, too.
