The PDA is not quite dead
By: Andy Walker

A round up of PDAs in the marketplace.

PalmOne Zire 31
www.palmone.com

US price: $129

Description:

The Zire 31 isn't the cheapest of the Palm models--the Zire 21 is, at $99--but at just $30, you get a lot more. The Zire 31 comes with a 160x160 colour screen instead of a plain old black and white display, has the ability to play MP3s and display photos, and has a SecureDigital slot for expanding the 16 megs of memory inside.

PalmOne Zire 72
www.palmone.com

US price: $299

Description:

The top end (for now) of the Zire line comes with a bright 320x320 colour screen, which is great for showing off the photos and video clips you can take with the Zire's 1.2 megapixel camera. There's 32 megs of memory inside the Zire, but a SecureDigital slot will help you top it up, for more multimedia files. The Zire 72 also has Bluetooth onboard, for connecting wirelessly to your phone, headset, printer or desktop.

Palm LifeDrive
www.palmone.com

US price: $499

Description:

Though most PDAs are moving towards multimedia, the biggest problem with most of them is that there's not enough memory. No problem, with the LifeDrive: it has a 4 gigabyte hard drive inside, so you can store a bunch of photos, videos, and MP3 files, without worrying that you'll be out of memory after installing a few. The LifeDrive has a 320x480 colour screen, and a button on the side that easily switches between portrait and landscape mode, to better view your media or wide spreadsheet files. Of course, it does all the things a Palm does normally--calendar, contacts, memopad, etc. It's also the first Palm model to sport both Bluetooth AND WiFi onboard, meaning you can connect to the Internet from almost anywhere now.

PalmOne Treo 650
www.palmone.com

US price: $399+ (depending on service plan)

Description:

The "smartphone" is definitely one of the future PDA trends: after all, why carry both a cell phone and a pocket organizer, when there's already overlap between the two? The Treo 650 is Palm's latest cell/PDA combo, and it updates the Treo line with a few smart features. First of all, the 23 megs of onboard memory is flash, not volatile, which means if you ever run out of battery power, you won't lose all your data, like you used to. The VGA camera still ain't great, but it's better than the one found on the 600. The Treo 650 also includes onboard Bluetooth, so you can use a wireless headset, or connect wirelessly to your PC. As before, the mini QWERTY keyboard allows you to easily enter data, whether you're entering an address of composing an email.

Dell Axim X50
www.dell.com

US price: $299 and up (depending on configuration)

As Pocket PCs go this is the one to get. It’s got decent battery power, a nice screen and a perfect form factor
